Historia firmy sięga 1924 roku, kiedy poprzednik Citizen, Shokosha Watch Instytut Badań sporządziła pierwszy kieszonkowy zegarek Citizen. Następnie burmistrz Tokio, Pan Shimpei Goto uznał że wspomniany zegarek Citizen , luksus tamtych czasów, będzie powszechnie dostępny dla zwykłych obywateli i musi być sprzedawany na całym świecie. Wkrótce po tym wydarzeniu w 1930 roku firma przyjęła nazwę Citizen Watch Company.
